Especially in an environment like the one we currently inhabit. There is such a dearth of music with any kind of syncopated groove on today's radio that this shiny, gem stands out like gold lame suit at a funeral. 24K Magic isn't necessarily innovative, more than it is a sound that is sorely missed. It's like revisiting your mama's home cooking after years of McDonalds, Chipotle, Chik-fil-a, and non-New York Pizza. It's the sound that even if you were in a surly mood, and listening reluctantly, you would have to give up a half of a smile for the lyric, "got to blame it on Jesus hashtag blessed". It's just fun. And after the 2016 we have had with terrorist attacks in nightclubs, a nasty election season, and numerous shootings by police and of police, we need some fun. We deserve some fun. We are long overdue for some fun.

Cue Bruno Mars, in all of his musical wisdom strolling in with the party anthem to take us through the end of the year. The song is pretty undeniable. It's charting on 6 US Billboard Charts alone and north of 50 Billboard Charts worldwide. Props also to Bruno for finding a way to make a hit that he doesn't really have to sing on. Bruno is known worldwide for his beautiful tenor voice, his love songs and his pop songs. He doesn't have to prove his vocal chops. The brilliance is in him creating a song that is essentially is all talking, chanting and jokes. The only singing is in the last two lines of the hook, '24 karat magic in the air, head to toe so playa". The solid music production is the workhorse here, but we also have to give just due to the lyrics. The entire song is one long insiders joke about life as a wanna be pimp playa. And from the reaction to the song, I would venture this is a universal aspirational theme for many.

The last element of this hit that I would be remiss to not mention is the music video. When you think back to the MTV generation when MTV, BET and VH1 were wall to wall music videos all day long, those videos really counted. They gave the release of a song an added lift, and dimension. Big budgets were dedicated to videos and they paid off. With the changes in the music industry and the lack of budget for most indie artists, videos are very modest these days. They are usually artist focused and simple. These work can work well too, and since I am an idie artist, thank God for them, but if you have the budget why not go all out......and look here, Bruno took his budget and his homies to Vegas and turned that heaux out! They probably got together on the private plane there, worked out their pimp steps, poured a few cocktails and were ready for the director to say "action!" by the time they landed. The video is hilarious, sleek, cheeky, did I mention hilarious? It makes you wish you had been invited on the trip. (I'm talking to you Bruno....) So hats off to Bruno, Shampoo Press and Curl and the Stereotypes for this winner. This song is a gift and I hope that it ushers in more music that reminds us how great, how fun, how funky, and how diverse music is supposed to be.

If for some reason you have not heard this song. As you know there are a ton of acts that have been associated with P Diddy over the years and of that ton, when you subtract the ones who are dead or in jail, there are still a ton left who are out here still entertaining. They have hopped on and off of the tour as it has made it's way across America. To say they corralled the best for the last night would be an understatement. Think about how you act every time a song that you used to love back in the day comes on the radio. Now, multiply that by about 50. That was how the evening went.

We had Diddy, Diddy and Mase, Diddy Mase and Total, 112, Lil Kim, Carl Thomas, Mary J Blige, The Lox, Mario Winans, Black Rob, Faith, JODECI and Snoop Dog and Dr. Dre, DMX, French Montana and Diddy's kids. I put JODECI in all caps cuz they are one of my all time favorite groups and I still can't believe that they were there. LOL. There was a really special moment where Diddy, Snoop and Dre were on stage and Diddy spoke about the old beef and how that is no more. He spoke about how much respect he has for Dre as a producer and how much love he has for Snoop as a friend. It was really moving when you think about how deep that rift was. As a girl who was born in Harlem, I did not develop a love for the West Coast and West Coast Hip Hop until I moved out here ten years ago. To see that all that nonsense that seemed so important then is done away with was a beautiful thing.

Everyone did all of their biggest hits, the whole concert made me feel like I was in my old Volvo, riding down the FDR from Harlem to Brooklyn listening to Hot 97. I'm not going to run down all the songs here, cuz it would take all day and honestly, you can do a good YouTube search and probably see the entire show but wow.....20 years of music. When Bad Boy was getting started, I was in Atlanta, interning for Dallas Austin at Rowdy Records, another Arista subsidiary. When 112 came out, I was going to Club 112 every weekend. Slim from 112 and I were in All City Orchestra together and his aunt was my orchestra teacher at Mays High. Bad Boy has literally been the sound track to twenty years of my life, working, partying, performing and traveling. The realization of that and the experience of HEARING it along with SEEING the old videos and newspaper headlines on the screens was really more than I could take. I laughed alot and screamed alot, sang alot and cried alot. So much has happened. So many people are gone. But for those of us that are still here, let's keep making music that we will be able to look back on and be proud of. And let's keep building in every area of art and education for The Culture, because we have already created, so very much.

Love and Light
Kia MuzeKIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/43633372016-09-08T15:29:22-07:002023-03-09T01:17:24-08:00For Free-DJ Khaled and DrakeThis song is pretty ratchet/raunchy so if that's not your thing, you may wanna just skip this song/blog. I don't have a lot to run down about this tune but I do want to touch on the reasons why this song works. Its currently at number 22 on the Hot 100 chart by Billboard where it peaked at 13 and hit 1 on the US Rhythmic chart.

1. The song is familiar. Its a play on Blow the Whistle by Too Short. It starts with the same lyrics and the bass line is reminiscent of the song as well. So from the first seconds of For Free, you already feel like this is a song that will go hard. And it delivers.

2. DJ Kahled. Khaled is easily, hands down, the most entertaining DJ/Producer on the planet. I think we can all agree on that and if you don't agree, just sub to his Snapchat for a week. It's lit. On this song, he's telling how "they didn't want him to have another anthem etc." I don't know who "they" are, but whomever they are, they need to have several seats. I don't know about you but I am definitely here for Khaled's anthems.

3. Drake. He sings and raps his way through this one serving up bravado about his longlasting superpowers, detailing all the nice and nasty things he loves about the woman in question, and topping it all of with a hook that begs the question, "Is this sex so good I shouldn't have to f--- for free? Is it just me?" Quietly, I think everyone has asked themselves this question at least once if they are being honest. That this immortalized in a song is comedy gold. That it rides a sick beat is just more than we can ask for.

4. The song is short. It clocks in at 3:03. It has two short verses and the hook. They get in and get out. You get your life and move on. Its like a perfect snack.

As you can see I love the song so I had to cover it. I stopped in my tracks. Dreamgirls is one of THOSE musicals, one that you wish you had been around to see the Original Broadway Cast. I have worked with Cleavant Derricks who was the original James Thunder Early and who was also responsible for many of the vocal arrangements. I have seen many productions of the show, but I have always wanted to see the ORIGINAL. There are so many lines and songs in the show that are wickedly fun to weave into one's every day life. I sing the Help Me Jesus's all the time from Fake My Way To the Top. I love the shade of "Effie don't try to make it" or "Effie we all got pain". I love Lorell's declarations of woman hood, "I'm a woman now!!" One of my favorite things though is Michelle's "I don't take that talk from no second rate diva, who can't sustain!" There are sooooo many gems in this show, not to mention the music, the harmonies, the storyline, the sets, the gowns....so much!! In my eyes it's perfect. So I bought tickets to this Dreamgirls 35 before I actually realized it was a concert and not a full on production. After I realized, I was a little apprehensive but the Divas did not disappoint. The ticket price was worth seeing Sheryl sashay around in her many gowns. I'm still trying to figure out how to get a body like hers. She and the other Divas gave us a little backstage tea, about how they came to be in the show. None of them were the first people considered for each role. They also spilled a little about the showmances and who were their favorite men in the show. Loretta found a few good opportunities to read Sheryl, mostly for being grand but it was all in good fun. You could tell that it would take more than a little shade to stop Sheryl's parade, LOL.

The ladies sang their signature songs, Ain't No Party, When I First Saw You, And I Am Telling You, both versions of One Night Only, I Am Changing and Sheryl sang some interesting trunk songs (songs that didn't make it into the show.) One was a number that Michelle sings to Effie about why she was taking her spot in the group. The other was a Deena song, that would be like a "Listen" song in the second act, but you could see that in both cases the songs just were not strong enough when put up against the the other monster hits.

There was some supporting cast, notably, Mary Wilson, Wilson Cruz, Kenny Lattimore and Marsai Martin but mostly the night centered around the Divas, with Perez Hilton helping to move the proceedings along. I danced in my chair and sang all night, annoying the man on my right to no end. But it was a once in a lifetime experience for me and I'll never forget it. The Dreamgirls made me HAPPY!!!

love and light
KIA MUZE

#dreamgirls
#dreamgirls35
#fordstheatre
#perezhilton
#sherylleeralph
#lorettdevine
#jenniferholliday

KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/42458762016-06-24T20:19:31-07:002022-05-30T07:05:54-07:00#ChainSmokers- Don't Let Me Down
This is one of my favorite songs currently on radio. The opening guitar lick is distintive and sweetly melodic. It opens the song in a way that draws you in.

The singer, Daya's vocal tone has that hoarse and airy quality that is so popular right now and her accent and affect is unique but also feels vaguely familiar. It rides perfectly on this track.

The lyrics are simple. Its a lot of repetition of Don't Let Me Down which works because this song is about the sonics and vibe and less about deep metaphors.

The synth that comes in at the hook sounds a bit like other edm anthems but complements the bass perfectly. Daya's topline sets up the drop so spot on that by the time it comes in, you are completely ready to get your bops!!!

This song is a perfect marriage of pop and dance. It has the tender songwriter moments, the big belty moments and then the dance builds and the drop release moments. It covers all the bases. Completely satisfying.

Don't Let Me Down ia riding at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. It's definitely on repeat for me! Congrats to The Chainsmokers and Daya on a nailing a smash!!!
KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/41970832016-05-27T12:45:13-07:002022-05-17T22:25:51-07:00Love on the Brain - #RihannaI have been listening to Anti since it came out in heavy rotation. I love that not one song sounds like any other song on the project. Literally every song could be in it's own little genre category and Rihanna sounds different vocally on almost every song.

Love on the Brain really reminds me of something that Amy Winehouse might sing, especially in the intro. I always have liked the song fine but recently it was used in a Grey's Anatomy episode and in that context it was so amazing that it pulled me out of the scene. I couldn't even remember that it was a Rihanna song. I was trying to place the voice and it took me almost till the end of the scene to realize that its from Anti. Rihanna's vocals are the best thing about the song. The delivery, tone and the emotion deliver the whole impact. The lyrics are pretty straight forward but when she does the transition from the pleading and begging of:
'Baby you got me like aaah, woo, aaah / Don't you stop loving me (loving me)'

to the dry and sober eyed realization of :

'Oh, and babe I'm fist fighting with fire just to get close to you'

it interior designs the whole room of the song. The song has SO much mood, and vibe. It's like it's own little standalone funhouse. When you have production like this and delivery like this you don't really have to work alot of lyrical magic, but if I had to speak to the lyrics, I would say that the raw nature of the lyrics and the few choice curse words just add to the whole appeal. When you're strung out or feeling d----matized, you don't really have the time or inclination to deliver a polite missive. You just want what you want, when you want it...

Congrats to Rihanna on her beasty performance on the Billboards. Props also to Joseph Angel, Fred Ball and Kuk Harrell who share credits with her on this hit.

love and light
KIA MUZE
#loveonthebrain
#rihanna
#billboards
KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/41888522016-05-20T12:10:17-07:002023-11-10T09:51:30-08:00Pray You Catch Me - #Beyonce'Disclaimer: I love me some Beyonce'. I'm not as obsessed as some of the Hive, I haven't seen every tour, and I don't know all the lyrics to every song. But my work out music is always about 75% Beyonce' and I have been rockin' with her since No, No, No when DC was still wearing the outfits that Tina was making in her spare time. We have all come a long way.

I wanna talk about this song tho. It's one of my favorites from Lemonade. It sounds so simple yet it's deceptively complex. I love the fact that it's stripped down production wise so you can just focus on the vocal and the piano until you get to the second verse and the string ensemble puts that nice bow on it. The vocal arrangements in the beginning remind me of some things that Laura Mvula would do. The vocalizations are artful and beautifully layered and ease you into that first lyric, "you can taste the dishonesty, it's all over your breath", which let's face it, its a bit devastating. It's such an indictment. I love it ;-)

The structure is really simple, A/B, A/B. No bridge. Straight and to the point which really sets up the hook to shine which is my favorite part. The melody for the hook is almost a throwaway, but repeats in a way so it gets burned into your head. And the lyrics just service the whole sentiment. Anyone who has ever suspected they were being cheated on knows that feeling of watching and listening like Inspector Clouseau trying to catch the person in a lie or unsavory situation. And as much as you want to catch them, you want them to CATCH YOU catching them so you can throw down that righteous indignation! Come on somebody....

Prayin' I catch you whispering
I'm prayin' you catch me listening
Prayin' I catch you whispering
I'm prayin' you catch me

That last, "I'm praying you catch me" , is brilliant in it's double significance of wanting to be caught snooping and just wanting to be caught emotionally when you're in downward spiral. I really love this song. I wish I'd written it. LOL. Kudos to James Blake, Kevin Garrett and Bey. The song sets the perfect tone for the rest of Lemonade which I think is a fantastic album with very definite beginning, middle and end. It takes you somewhere which is what music is supposed to do.

love and light

KIA MUZE
#Beyonce
#prayyoucatchme
#Lemonade
KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/41326332016-04-25T20:49:10-07:002022-05-13T02:30:09-07:00No More Mr. Nice Girl. #sorrynotsorry
No More Mr. Nice Girl. #sorrynotsorry. This may be a sentiment shared by many a frustrated woman at one time or another. KIA MUZE is back second quarter 2016 with a new single detailing the freedoms on the other side of such a declaration.

'This day is mine, I'm front of the line, I feel much stronger now than I did before.'

'I'm pressin' on, got my game face on, no longer looking back, walking out that door.'

Despite the title, the song is bouncy and positive. The kick and the bass drive you head bops whether you want to or not. No man bashing happening here, but rather self celebration which for many women can be a hard thing to do. When asked what prompted KIA to write the song, she cited that she "initially heard the phrase on a tv show, and it immediately struck me as a strong song title or song concept. After that, it didn't take long to write. I didn't want the song to be negative, but I wanted it to make the point that doormat season, is over. Even women who are very strong in their professional lives can be accommodating in their personal relationships in ways that ultimately don't serve their relationships long term. There is a way to compromise without giving yourself away and that's essentially what I was trying to convey."

NMMNG marks KIA's fourth release on One Nation World Groove following the Flood EP, the nu-disco collaboration from last fall with the guys from electro label Leisure Sports Records. Kia began One Nation after stepping away from the musical theatre and tv acting worlds to focus on a career as a songwriter and producer. Kia has spent the last year doing a lot of collaborating with various producers writing for libraries and other artists. She is currently working on a second EP of her own for release later this year.

I released that Lionel Richie cover of You Are just 4 months ago and it has been extremely well received. If you missed it, you can grab it here.

This blog post however is about my NEW ISH which is being released on March 12!!! LOL. I wrote a song last summer called Remember. The main idea of the song is in the hook, "so that we could always see, our love like it's meant to be, let's leave clues so we remember...." I got the idea from my ex-fiance. When we first started dating, he wanted us to make a videos of everything we were doing together and also do confessionals of how we felt about each other in the moment. He said that we would need it down the line. Did we ever......Unfortunately, we never did those videos. But it gave me the idea for this song. It's very important to document the evolution of a love relationship in my opinion. In the low periods where you are not sure that you like the person very much, this is especially important because you have to find your way back to the love. This really can't be overstated. Don't take your love for granted. Document it and nurture it as much as possible. This is not to share with all of social media (you people know who you are), but for yourself so that you can have the clues to find your way back......

Love and Light
KIA MUZE
#kiamuze
#remember
#1NationWorldGrooveKIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/32968392014-11-17T16:45:18-08:002022-04-18T15:26:12-07:00Is it time to eat yet?Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday. I love the Macy's parade. I get up early every year to watch all of the new Broadway shows perform at the top of the parade and try to spot any of my friends. Then I laugh at the talent on the floats trying to lipsynch to their own songs. The line up for this year is sort of interesting. Megan Trainor, Miss All About that Bass is performing, hmmmm, as well as KISS (say what?) and that Jonas boy who just showed his butt in his Kim K. remake photo. About half way through the parade I am bored and focusing on any last minute cooking I am doing as I await the Westminster Dog show!! I always try to make my dog watch but she's not really into it. After the dog show I am usually ready to eat. My family eats early in the afternoon, I guess so that you have plenty of time to go back and eat again in the evening? Really I don't know why we eat so early but , really....why not? If you are going to do gluttony you might as well go all the way!! I should start a juice fast now to prepare, LOL!

I wish all of you a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving. Well, finished high school in Atlanta. I was a transplant from DC when I was 16 so it was most awkward and devastating to have to move house, move state and move school. This was to be my 8th school since kindergarten. It ended up being for the best though. I grew and learned alot in Atlanta and grew to love it. I even moved back after finishing college for a time and would take trips down as often as I could after moving to New York. All this to say, its odd that I have not been in Atlanta in maybe ten years and I happen to be here now. Its been a great trip down memory lane, a fabulous time reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones! And a perfect time to revive this blog!

In music news, I'm actually here for work. Native Instruments is rolling out some new goodness. Komplete 10 and Komplete 10 Ultimate as well as Komplete Kontrol Keyboard series. Its all pretty impressive and you can catch it over at Native Instruments dot com. We are doing some demos at Patchwerk Studios for the musical masterminds of this fair city and I think that it will be great and edutaining event :-) Glad to be able to participate!

In KIA MUZE news, I have a new cover single called You Are, which is a Lionel Richie song. The video for that is on the way. In writing and collab news I am working on some new tunes that I am excited share when they are done. They have a life of their own and are different from what is on the Superhero album. Really I was obsessed with every type of award show as a child because my mother would never let us stay up to watch them when we were really young. As we got older, we would have to go to bed halfway through the program. So annoying. So when then opportunity presented itself to go this year I totally jumped at the chance. I wasn't quite sure what to expect since I was going by myself. It was just my intention to observe and take it all in, but God had other plans. I met so many fun people, especially my girl Katxx who owns the record label Love Fame Records. She is an amazing DJ Diva. And then in a total God moment, I got to meet Quincy Jones who is my number one music producer hero. We chopped it up about his autobiography which I have read so many times, running cold water over one's wrists to stay awake writing music, the gangster times he experience as a youngster in Chicago and so much more. The show itself was amazing too. My favorite moment was Imagine Dragons and Kendrick Lamar. I also enjoyed Bey and Jay, the weddings and P!nk!! Boyz II Men KILLED at the after party. They had the crowd in the palm of their hands. Last night was easily one of the best I have ever had. I am super grateful for the opportunity and will never forget it!KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/23169272014-01-03T06:55:06-08:002022-04-18T15:30:45-07:002014 and emergency chocolateThat's a pleasant number, no? Other obligations tried to take over my entire life. By the end, I had to set some boundaries. Holidays are called holidays for a reason. And that is all I have to say about that.

The short weeks do make it easier to slide back into the daily work routine but no matter what getting out of bed before 11 am is a sacrilege in my opinion. But before all of that Grammys, which I am super excited about and Coachella! I have no idea who is performing at Coachella but with a whole weekend of back to back bands, there has to be at least 25% music that I want to see/hear. Do you think Beyonce plans to stay out on the road now that this Visual Album is out and mayhaps drop by Coachella?????? I've been in Berlin for seven days and I still can't get right on the sleep situation. Every day at like 6pm Berlin time I'm racing for my pillows. Then I'm awake at midnight or 2am and stay up till 7am. As I type, its 5am Berlin time and I'm up scheming ways to stream Thursday's Scandal episode. So far I have been unsucessful.

Tomorrow is my last day in the fair city of Berlin. I have been buried in work for most of the trip so I am sorry that I have not really been posting pics and videos. I have them though and will do it when I get home. Berlin is a very energizing place, the people are friendly and relaxed and open. There is a a strong artistic vibe that I definitely resonated with and you can tell that its a city on the verge. In certain ways it reminds me of NYC in the 80s with all of the grafitti and street art and street culture. The company I work for had their Christmas party at one of the hot and happening clubs in the city since after all, it is a music software company. The club totally reminded me of a club in NYC where you would enter on Saturday and leave maybe Sunday afternoon or evening. Big, sprawling and ready for the 'down for whatever' crowd. LOL.

Today I did a walking tour and got to dig a little deeper into the history of the city. Germany and especially Berlin has a VAST history so clearly I only scratched the surface but I definitely learned some things and felt some things. WW2 and the fall of the Berlin Wall are both events that happened really not that long ago. When I cleaned out my grandmother's apt last year upon her death I found a cache of letters from my grandfather to her and they were all written while he was away in the army during WW2. So to walk through the streets of Berlin and hear stories from my tour guide and think about all that happened, how it affects us today, and what might have happened if the Nazis had not lost certainly gave me a lot to think about.

I would like to come back to Berlin when I have more time to really take it in but I am definitely grateful for this small taste. It has been a great and reflective way to wrap up what has been a year of learning for me. Lots of lessons to carry into 2014.KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/21923562013-12-08T13:19:08-08:002022-04-18T15:30:52-07:00Hi from the Michelberger!KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/21415032013-12-01T19:01:14-08:002022-04-18T15:30:55-07:00Happy Post-Thanksgiving!!!I hope that you are still happily eating leftovers and not thinking about your return to reality tomorrow. When you think about the goodness of God in the minutae as well as the big things, it can be overwhelming, and that's what I had, an overwhelming weekend.

Now its time to pull out all the Christmas stuff and get to decorating. I'm dragging my heels a bit on that. cuz it means a complete reorganization of my place and its alot more fun to keep eating leftovers and watching Hallmark Christmas movies.

There was one sad note to the holiday weekend and that was there seemed to be many people who lost loved ones over the weekend. Friends of mine, lost parents and aunts, TBN lost Paul Crouch and of course Paul Walker passed away in that car accident. All of these losses, continually put things into proper perspective. Life is meant to be lived and lived on PURPOSE. Whatever your destiny is, be about the business of living it out. Honestly most of the work I have been doing has been on YouTube and in the recording studio lately. I hope that everyone had a great summer. It still feels like Summer in LA. 90 degrees like every day. I'm not complaining. Its perfect beach weather and anyone who knows me knows that one of my primary reasons for moving out here was sun, sand and water. PERFECT LIFE is life by the ocean.

So I have been pretty busy. Working on a couple of collabs right now. Finishing songs for the new project. Rehearsing for my first show in ages on the 24th of September at Molly Malones in LA. And its all GOOD. I'd much rather be busy than bored.

I saw Lee Daniels' The Butler yesterday and it blew me away. I cried the entire film. Certain scenes reminded me so much of my own family. I come from a family of domestic workers, my grandparents on both sides were and the stories they tell were just like what I saw in the film. It really affected me at a core level which also speaks to the acting which was AMAZING. If there are not some Oscar noms for this movie, it will be a huge travesty. If you have not seen this film, run to a theatre. Not only is it a movie about family dynamics but also about our American history and I think every American should see it.

I went to see Gatsby last weekend and I really loved it. The movie is a visual FEAST! I am not a Baz stan, or a stan for anyone else associated with the film but it was gorgeous and interesting and really took me on a ride!! I listened to the soundtrack before the movie and didn't love it but after watching the film once (not in 3D) and then going back to listen to it again, the songs totally pull it together and help bring the film to a point where you almost feel like you can reach out and touch it. Well this has never been more true than the rolling out of Superhero. It feels a little bit like Masta P selling out of the back of his trunk. Except I am selling out of the back of my little internet portal www.kiamuze.com and FB and Twitter, LOL. Its pretty interesting to be hands on selling this way, and so different from my baby interning days back at Rowdy/Arista. My science brain is having fun carrying out marketing experiments and tweaking them for omptimal progress.

The flip side of running your own PR is that, it is exhausting. Every weekend since its been out, I have had big plans that always get knocked out by me passing out from sheer broke-down-ness. Seems like indie freedom and tiredness go hand in hand.

The good news is that Superhero is getting love from various blog outlets and on iTunes, the Brainspace video is getting more views daily and people are really responding to the Cleopatra motif. That makes me happy because I have been studying her and looking for an opportunity to do her for a while now. It was amazing to get to be the Kia Muze version of her for the video and also just to go crazy with ideas and imagery in that one. That was the most exotic I have felt in a while. Boom shaka lacka!

I want to thank all of you guys again for supporting and encouraging and purchasing and leaving reviews on iTunes and sharing across your social networks and showing love! I love you all for helping me realize a dream.

I think that every home should have a dog and some kids. If you're not set up for the kids yet or just can't stand them then at least you should have a dog. Dogs, require you to express love, they require for you to get out of your bed and feed and walk them, they require you to not be so self centered. Having a dog is an excercise in love and in being loved. Honestly there is nothing better than coming home to something furry and cute that is beside itself panting simply because you are home (and happen to be the dispenser of food). I really don't care if its only about the food, I like the fact that she is enthusiastic about it!!! And to that end, my pup has enthusiastically pulled me thru many a depression and dark day. She thinks I am a champ and so I would like to be one.

This post is also about non-dog stuff like my EP coming out on Tuesday. It will be up on my site as well as the usual digital outlets. The second video for Brainspace is HERE.

If the rest of the months of the year are going to be like that then I don't know.....I'm not really in rush to hit my senior years. But please believe when I do I will be the fly old lady in the church. Don't get it twisted. I was just wondering during the Superbowl where does all of my free time go?? I used to use it to learn Beyonce choreography which I would then hit my dinner guests with whenever I had dinner parties at my house. Don't be alarmed, they often joined in, performers are always ready to perform,LOL. But as I watched King B give her Halftime offering, I realized that I am am not up to date with all of my moves. I just don't have the time to spend hours learning videos, which has been one of my favorite past times since Janet Jackson, Pleasure Principle (YAAAAAS!). I know that I have a somewhat addictive personality, as it relates to certain things but I had to laugh today when I rushed home to lay vocals and realized that my stuffed up nose and stopped up ears and swollen tonisils weren't really lending themselves to really beautiful singing......LOL. So instead of laying vocals I tried to sing some Karen Clark Sheard which is what everyone with limited vocals should do . I love singing. Its such a stress reliever and a physical thrill. I didn't always feel that way about it. I think I used to be more nervous to sing than I actually enjoyed it. But now, chile please, if I don't sing, I go a little nuts. I'm working on a song called "If I could run away" . Someone on Twitter tried to scold me and say that that's no way to deal with a problem. LOL. They just don't know. Sometimes it is.

Its a Friday night and I just caught up on my Project Runway and Top Chef. You know I love watching people make stuff!!!

Quick update, the discs for my project are going into production next week so all of my investors will be getting their copy very soon and all of you friends will be able to buy a physical copy or purchase digitally as you so choose. Its hard to belive that its all happening after such a long time. And its the main thing that is keeping me focused after what was the most dismal holiday season I have ever experienced. One thing I do know is that even when things look dark, dark, horrible, hopeless, there is always something to be thankful for and the awareness of that blessing brings peace so I guess everything is gonna be alright.

The thoughts in my head today are about friendship and loyalty. I don't really see any reason to call someone a "friend" if there is not an inherent obligation to be one. Primarily to listen and not judge, offer grace and mercy such as we would want to receive ourselves as well as some degree of loyalty. I guess during our walk in life, it is always a surprise to see who really shows up for you in your various times of need. I just thank God today that I can say I have some really good friends. A great core group who know when to check in and know when to give space. That is something to celebrate in this Season of Celebration. God is GOOD!

Its shameful that its been two months since my last blog and I have no real excuse. I have been scrambling working at my J-O-B and recording Christmas tunes and trying to have a personal life. Oh yes, and watching some good tv. Right now I am watching Project Runway Allstars. I love to watch all of the Project Runways. Like musicians, I am in awe of people who use their hands to make these fabulous frocks. I think that Ulli is my favorite designer but I also love watching Anthony Ryan, he is such a hoot. While his model walked a little of her panties peeked out. His repsonse, "Who doen't love a good panty?" My sentiments exactly Anthony Ryan.

I bought this usb drive for a friend and every time I see it I can't believe I didn't get one for myself. It would be the perfect desk buddy. I don't know why I ever tried to term myself OCD. I mean yes I am particular about certain things like how I like my music to sound or my food to taste and maybe the GENERAL VICINITY of where my belongings are, but recently I have been comparing myself to others in these respects and I have found.....I am not OCD at all. At. All.

Its so crucial....passion. So often we are checking items off of lists, and "getting things done" and they fall flat. And they fall flat because there is no energy behind them. When you're burned out, sometimes all you have left is a bit of effort and a to do list. But its worth it to skip the to do list, go lay down for a minute and conjure that energy back up, because when you then attack that list, the passion behind it will cause those to-dos to have trajectory and flight and attraction power. Its worth it to do the self care, I have found. 5 minutes of self care is worth far more than 60 minutes of un-energized effort.

This is a view from the Hubble Telescope. I have had a deep fascination with images of sky and water lately. Trying to fathom the intelligence that fomed the nature that is around me is something I could ponder forever and not get tired. To think that the smallest stream of that knowledge goes into our creativity is so exciting to me!!! And encouraging, it means that your ability to create is never-ending. So think about that. And then get to work!!!

There are gurus and publicists who will tell you they have discovered the way. Managers and agents who will tell you there is only one way, and well meaning loved ones who will ask you what is taking you so long to find the way???? I don't know about you but this can be mind numbing and for me anti creative. I'm not writing about this because I have hit upon any secret in locating THE WAY. But I do think the way probably looks less like banal annoucements and more like communication and genuine interest in people. I just want to encourage someone today if they are scratching their head about distribution/promotion and the like as I have been doing, to realize that you honestly have the rest of your days to share your art. Whether folks catch it this time around or as a "classic" , just keep sharing it and keep making it.

The longer it takes to write a blog entry the more I am unsure about what to write.

There has been a lot of transition in my own life and I have taken most of the first quarter of the year to absorb and adjust to that. I changed jobs in February so I am at a new music software company. Its been a good transition. I'm in final mixes on my album. Half of it is mixed. Feels weird to be mostly done. I need to start thinking about putting these tunes on their feet in live context now. And the rest of life has been exciting and new. New experiences, new people, new revelation. 2012 has been awesome and amazing and given me alot to songwrite about! God is good yall. As good as you will allow Him to be for you.

Like all of you I have run the whole gamut of emotions following the transition of Whitney Houston from disbelief to denial to heartbreak to resignation to joining with the rest of the world in celebrating her homegoing. Whitney's music was so omnipresent and iconic that there can hardly be a person who does not have an onslaught of memories associated withe each song, each moment, each film. Like any little girl who dreamed of growing up to become a singer, Whitney had it all for me. The beauty, the emotional intelligence and the pipes. Lord, just let a a drop of the annointing on her cords fall on mine . All these years later, I am still looking to her poise, and vocal mastery for secrets and clues. You could mine that material forever and still not get all of it. What she had was a true GIFT.

I don't have a tv. I watch all of my shows, news and entertainment online and during this week I was really glad of it. I didn't want to hear all of the talking head chatter. I am satisfied with my memories and her art. I don't need anyone telling me about their speculations and rumors from unconfirmed sources about what happened. I will always remember Whitney as she was at her best, and now that she is with the Father, I know that she is restored and and not only restored but enhanced. When I hit the Throne Room, I 'll be ecstatic to hear that voice again.
KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/1318782012-01-04T03:37:42-08:002022-04-18T15:41:33-07:00Happy New Year! Mind over Matter. Hey Peeps!

Glad to see all of you made to the other side :-) As we begin another year, armed with Lists, Goals and Resolutions I plan to work it from the inside out. Not physically force myself to get things done, but get them done in my mind and get settled with a positive outcome in my mind before I lay had to anything. Coming out Head First. In this way I hope to have more fruit and more ease. Last year I had lots of fruit and lots of being tired. Lemme tell ya, being tired is no fun. I got sick the Thursday before Christmas and stayed sick thru till about yesterday. Of course that did not stop me from celebrating. Nothing can stop my celebrating, lets be clear....but I do know that there a better way to do things....a higher way.

When 2011 started, I was watching alot of Terri Savelle, who if you don't know her, is a really sweet lady from Texas who has an annointing to teach in the area of goal setting amongst other things. She always asks, "Do you want to be in the same place this time next year as you are today?" There is something about that question, that automatically makes you yell out NO!!! Even if your life is great, your career is great, your relationships and family are great, everyone wants growth. No one wants to be stagnant, IMHO. So to that end, she and her father, Dr. Jerry Savelle, who is an amazing Bible teacher, teach alot about the prayer of petition and writing down your goals. I did that at the beginning of the year as many of us do. But this year unlike other years, I actually revisit the list/petition. Its actually a notebook and I carry it around alot. I have noticed that while there are some things in the book that have not yet come to pass, many things in the book have. What's better is the things that that have come that I did not ask for. And even more fun than that are the ways that some of these things are coming to pass. God sure is creative, LOL. So as we hit this last quarter of the year, I am shifting into overdrive. Not to toil, because the Blessing means you are out from under the curse of toil. But I am in overdrive to avail myself to the work that still is to be done this year towards finishing my tasks and encouraging you to finish yours!! Let's finish 2011 strong and not let ourselves be distracted by the enemy. Distraction leads to defeat y'all. Take your victory by faith! Its the faith that takes not the faith that waits!!!

Kia
KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/1110292011-08-23T18:50:50-07:002022-04-18T15:45:02-07:00Word is a serious bond..... That was the ish to say when i was like, 10...... but it still holds true. Word IS a Serious Bond. People don't understand how much weight their word holds. And then they wonder why they aren't successful. Or why the messed up thing they confessed just came to pass. Cuz u SAID it. Everything I have been saying for the past 5 days has come to pass TODAY. For better or for worse, TODAY was the day. I was prepared so it was all good, but I do wish I had confessed some better outcomes. On the bright side....there WAS a bright side and I am still basking in it, yaaaas! On the not so bright side, I learned more abt confession which in and of itself IS a bright side. And, my theory about Genesis, Adam and Eve so far is holding true :-) Bam!

I said that I would explain about 009.....in college I went to see a Bond film with my girls. You know that feeling when you go to see an action flick and you feel like you have to duck and peep around corners as you leave???.....Right, well, we all took a double O. I was 009, and although there was a double oh five, etc, only my 009 held over the years. It shortened to double-oh. So if you are my tight ace boon, you either call me Ki, 009, double oh, Mahogany or Acapella. This is the first and only time I will highlight my nicknames. Honestly Kia is short enough that it does not require a nickname, except for to create intimacy.

I am finally ready for bed!!! Double-oh signing out.
xoxoxo!!

KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/1076412011-08-02T10:14:51-07:002022-04-18T15:45:05-07:00Then Get Back to Bidness Shouts to Beyonce, that's my favorite part of the Run the World song, LOL. Yaaaass :-) Hey Peeps I am back after a vacation and then a recovery from said vacation. Vegas really is not a vacation town if we are keeping it 100. The only lying down I did was cuz I stayed up too late and pushed to hard on the dance floor. But, I had fun so alls well that ends well. I'm kind of done with Knowledge, just some misc vocals and lots of mixing to do. Moving on to the next joint which is called Don't Save Me. Its got me geeked, like really. I love the track and the lyrics and the melody and the groove. If it turns out the way I think it will, it will most likely be the next single. I can't wait to perform it live, it swings a little like Best I Ever Had by Drake, the drums give me life. Anyway, I'm still recording it this week then I will be looking for 3 to 4 more songs before I can really start to see the project as a whole. Those of you who pray, please add me to your list. I need focus, diligence and patience to finish this project.

On the YT front there is a new Bouncy vid, I covered 1 +1. Its on the YT channel (kiamuze) not on the media page here. Media page getting crowded. Its not a request this time, the song actually grew on me, and began to move me emotionally so I had to cover it. I'm going to get back to requests next. There are a few Kelly Clarkson's up next. Love Kelly.

Ok, hope everyone is having a MAJOR week. I loves ya!

009 aka Kia Muze aka double-oh (I'll tell the 009 story in a later blog).
KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/1056592011-07-13T16:16:10-07:002022-04-18T15:45:08-07:00The Knowledge Ever had so much information flying at you that you thought your brain could never hold it all? That's how I feel. And I want to stay here too, just cramming info in and moving fast, fast, fast! Supersonic.

Finally pushed past all the old bizness that was hanging around and now I'm recording Knowledge. It was a song I wrote in 09 for a feature that my sister Dilsey wrote called of course, KNOWLEDGE. One of the top 3 banks in the country had given funding for the film before the recession hit and the bailout happened. Now we are starting over, but I loved the song, it's beautiful and prophetic. Even my mom liked it and encouraged me to re record it for the album, and she rarely likes anything. So the trailer is done for the film, it has the demo version of the song dropped in, but I believe the time is now for Knowledge to happen on all fronts. No weapon....this is the heritage and I am shouting now :-)

Still celebrating the birthday :-) I'm such a child about it, but I don't care what anybody thinks. My mom has this picture of me on my 5th birthday dancing at my birthday party in a tiara by myself while everyone else is eating cake or something. Prophetic. Still dancing to the beat of my own drum. Literally.

Hope you are all having a powerful week.

So much has happened in the week or so since my last post. Some fantastic, some not so fantastic.....but God is still Able. I am finding that technology while supposedly making it easier for me to reach out to you, is creating more work on the marketing side and less time for the creative side. I have been posting and uploading and editing all night. I have some new YT vids and some vid from the Watts show. All that stuff you can find on the Media page. The show vid is all over the place, I had a great lady trying to help me out with the video but, there were some problems with the controls (LOL) etc.....whatevs, there is enough there for you to get the idea....LOL. I also covered Stronger by Britney Spears and did a little pseudo vid for that which was all types of fun.....it felt like I was 10 years old again putting on Friday the 13th the play with my cousins at the family reunion. And there is also a cover of Ready for Love by India Arie. I can't say how much I love that song. It was a request from a subber on YT. Lately these requests have been all up in my business and the timing has been outlandish considering all that is and is not going on in my personal life......Today someone asked me to cover I Will Survive. Sigh. I'm gonna need some good drag queen wear for that one!

I hope you all had a fabulous Fourth. My birthday was great and I of course am still celebrating!!! This really is shaping up to be a Supernatural Summer!!

EL LAY is mad sunny, and in my life the Sun is definitely burning thru the cloud cover illuminating things that I could not see before. Its an exciting time.

The show at the Watts Men's Health Fair was alot of fun, I met many kool peeps and had a great time. Will get some footage and pics up very soon. I'm a little behind in editing. I think there are two vids on deck waiting already. The weekend was the most fun I've had in a long time. I had not performed since April so I was overdue and then it was BET weekend so I got to connect with alot of new people and see soooo many artists perform both at the Watts show and the KJLH event. I LOVE artists. Creativity is infinitely expressed. Amazing. To top it all off I got to hear Devon Franklin speak at One Church International and he delivered a Word of a Lifetime. I am hoping that a link will go up of it that I can share. It is crucial listening for any artist who wants to succeed while holding on to their faith. You can learn more in his book also, Produced by Faith.

This week is my bday week, I'm excited peeps!! So if I don't find my way to making any more blog posts, trust that I am somewhere getting in trouble.....Yaaaaaas!!!
KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/1031192011-06-16T19:28:57-07:002022-04-20T11:19:25-07:00Yet will i trust Him Never look to the facts to tell you the truth. By the way, I love the remix on that song by Unk, but that is soooooo off topic. Smh. My point is we are just walking out the things that God has given us which is where the faith part comes in. And that is a moment to moment thing, cuz honestly the doubts come assailing often. But the devil is liar, and I already have the victory. Now walk that out!!!! I'm feelin' a little feisty today, like I could preach a whole sermon on keeping the faith. I'll spare you. Updates. Working on an Adele cover for YT, she recorded Rollin in a helluva key. One that she usually doesn't use live herself......but that is the key I want to do the cover in so, we's workin on it. Finishing up the mixing/sweetening on Let There Be. STILL waiting fro my HD camera so I can shoot the EL LAY video. And the Stronger video. That's about it. It's enough for today. Wish you all a really fantastic weekend, may it be ULTRA in every respect!!!!

Kia Muze
KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/1008222011-05-24T17:46:43-07:002022-04-20T11:19:39-07:00So Amazing and I've been waiting.....

Shout out to Luther!!!!

Seriously though, life has been amazing. Like great and then just like, wow, that really happened? The happening being good, bad or sad. I've been praying alot. For those I know and love and also for those I don't know. Praying for peace, restoration and serenity. The enemy is busy, playing mind games on people and trying to drive them crazy. I know from personal experience that those times are never fun. I pray a spirit of discernment for myself and whomever else may need it.

Black Velvet is not happening this month, but I do have a new YT video. I covered Kissing You by Des'ree and its on my YT page. I will get it up here too. It was a request that came out of my Butterflies cover. I had forgotten all about that song, but when I pulled it up and listened again and saw all the clips from Romeo and Juliet with Leo and Claire, I was instantly transported back to that time. I LOVED that song when it came out. Beyonce covered it too, and hers is pretty but Des'ree's is SUCH a cry. Like a seriously DEEP cry, the love weight of the feeling on the song is like heavy. I can't even hardly sing the song without breaking down into an ugly cry which is crazy. Esp since I'm not dating anyone right now. LOL, maybe that's why I'm crying, hello! In any event, I do hope I did the song justice and I was glad to do it. I keep getting Heather Headley requests as well. So amusing to me, cuz when I was trying to jump into her Lion King and Aida costumes back in the day, I couldn't get hired. Now everyone says I sound like her.

Anyhoo, I hope you all are fabulous and living life to the full!!!!!
Love, Love, Love. That is all.

I just did a Butterflies cover on the old camera that I will post up on the media page. I have been loving that song for so long, and with Marsha remixing it and me being in the zone, it was a perfect storm for me to just get it done. Check it out, it's pretty entertaining on several levels....LOL.

Its been hot in EL LAY. Like high 80s, low 90s. Sunny, balmy. Sit on a fancy patio and drink cocktails weather. I have managed to not do that. For now. LOL. But I have not been much in the mood to sit in anybody's studio mixing the same song for the 50th time either. Jesus be a fence, or rainy day. Never thought I'd ever say that. I can't stand the rain. New Edition. Need. Help. So. Distracted. Winning! You know how you're hungry and then you get past the point? That's where I am at, but I WILL have a fish taco before its all over.

First things first, the Prince concert was the bomb-diggity. I have some video. I just loaded it up to my computer. I am wondering if I can post it without the Purple One shutting my @ss down. I'll try to post up a little Purple Rain snippet for you soon. It was really amazing. He did like 6 encores too. I would have stayed there with him all night. But alas, folks started leaving and he decided there was no need for a seventh encore! LOL. Love him!!

Anyway, I am in a sense of wonderment cuz God has been dealing with me on some things and it's just funny to get confirmations of personal revelation from outside sources. Don't you love when that happens? Easter was so great, we had a fantastic service for Good Friday, Jesus rode in the tabernacle on a donkey and Easter was just off the chain. That mass choir sang the roof off. I blew out my own voice and I'm not even in the Choir!!!!!! So because I am recuperating, I won't be at Black Velvet on Thursday, but I will be doing some You Tubing this weekend so I will have some new vids soon.

Had to get dressed for the concert this morning, so I am sitting here at work in the studio in shiny beads. LOL. Kia Muze
KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/969012011-04-07T10:56:37-07:002022-04-20T11:20:19-07:00Killing your children Ok, I had never heard this "saying" before, and then a friend of mine was doing a run of a pretty high profile musical in DC and the lead had been fired right before the show opened and apparently, this phrase was used in reference to the firing.....a little distasteful, and confusing but I do sort of get the meaning of what the person was trying to say. So this past week I have been trying to whittle down the songlist for my album and there is a song that I have been working on for a year called Rewind. That should have been the first clue I imagine....LOL. I love the song, it totally takes me back to a place and a time and a person and I do some gut bucket singing on the end of it, however, it just ain't good enough or salvagable (is that a word) enough to make the cut. When I finally realized that the other day, I was devastated. I felt like I was killing one of my children. We get so attached to our little pieces of art. Its a wonder we give them away or share them at all, when that is precisely the point of making it. Right? KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/725532011-04-01T07:58:32-07:002022-04-20T11:20:25-07:00Struggle for balance Seems like before I started doing music full time, and was doing more auditioning for acting gigs, there was more time to work out and keep the hair and nails done, spend a hour doing hair and make up etc. Now that I am in a music studio 60 plus hours a week, my beauty regime seems to be out of the window. On one hand, I reason, no one sees me, or at least no one I care about so what does it matter really? But then on the other hand, how we look has a great deal to do with how we feel about ourselves and how we approach our lives and our expectations for what we want out of life. I realize that I need to keep my maintenance up, or preserve my sexy as Diddy would say . Take that, take that! But still, I struggle to find balance between checking items off of my list to dos and simply trying to look glam all the time.

And BTW, in the scheme of life, with wars and rumors of wars and trial and tribulation, I realize that this probably seems trivial. It was the Japan earthquake and the 6 blown up nuclear reactors that reminded me that in life you have to enjoy the little things. I had a day when I thought the world as we know it was coming to an end and that Revelations was upon us. It took me instantly back to 9/11 and how I felt on that day. And then when I looked at my life I no longer felt stressed about my bank account, or my upcoming show or the track that won't come together cuz impending disaster puts EVERYTHING in perspective. Gotta enjoy each moment while you can.
KIA MUZEtag:kiamuze.com,2005:Post/960082011-03-28T08:40:17-07:002022-04-20T11:20:32-07:00EL LAY @ Black Velvet Lounge I perfomed EL LAY last Thursday at Boarner's, otherwise known as the Black Velvet Lounge. We had some die hard troopers in the house as it was a rainy and cold night. I want to say a special thanks to my friends, Nicole, Adolpha, Omar and Dorian for staying till the end, a special thanks to Big Dave and the biggest thanks to Conisha Wade for holding down my background vocals. We had a blast. The next show will be next month, the 4th Thursday and I hope to see you there. I will post video on the media page as soon as I can.

I spent most of the weekend re singing some of my vox for the Britney cover and trying to catch up on movies. I finally saw No Strings Attached, which I really enjoyed. What I am working on- besides tweaking on this site, I am in the middle of recording a Britney tunes cover. I won't say which one yet, it's a surprise, but in my opinion it's one of her best songs. I am also working on an original tune called Let There Be and prepping 3 other songs from the EP to go to master. Also rehearsing and building my show. I would love to be opening for someone by the end of this year on a tour. Let There Be.......
